1. Your customer will hand you their credit card so that you can slide the customer's card through your credit card terminal and then enter the amount of the sale. The terminal then dials a 1-800 # to connect to the processor for authorization.

 

2.  The processor then provides that information to the bank that issued the credit card and the issuing bank then checks to see if the card is valid and to see if the requested amount is available on the card.

 

3.  The issuing bank sends back an approval number or a decline message to the processor.

 

4.  The information is then transmitted back to the credit card terminal which then allows the merchant to print a receipt for the customer to sign. This process takes approximately 10-15 seconds to complete unless you are using a newer internet enabled credit card terminal which allows for the transaction time to be cut in half.

 

5.  During the course of a day a standard merchant will have completed multiple credit card transactions and will need to “settle" or "batch out" their terminal which will begin the final process of the transaction. In many cases we will be able to set your terminal so that it will automatically “batch” at a specific time of the day. (Usually in the early a.m. during non business hours.) Once the settlement or “batch” is initiated, the funds are transferred from the card issuing bank and are electronically deposited into the merchant's checking account. This process typically takes no more then 24 hours business banking time which basically equals two business days from the time of the original transaction.
